About Us

OUR HISTORY
Ursack was started over 20 years ago out on the West Coast by a true pioneer of the industry, Tom Cohen. As an avid hiker, inventor, and businessman, Tom was tired of carrying the hard-sided bear-resistant food containers and came up with the idea for a soft-sided bag.
The idea really took off as a business when a mandate came from the national parks requiring hikers to carry all food in a bear-resistant container. Hikers needed something flexible and reliable for their overnight treks and Ursack met that need.
OUR NAME
The name Ursack comes from the Latin term Ursa, meaning bear. Our products, Ursack Major and Ursack Minor, are named after the two most famous constellations in the Northern Sky, Ursa Major (great bear) and Ursa Minor (little bear).

WE'RE CHALLENGERS
Ursack is the ONLY IGBC certified light weight and collapsible alternative to Bear Cans. We’re proud to create a product that’s innovative, evolving, and challenges the products on the market today.
The market is stagnant with hard-sided canisters and 99% of our competition is still producing the same clunky product they’ve made for years.
Are you ready to Kick the Can?
WE'RE CONSERVATIONIST
Our goal is to break the habit of bears associating people with food. We believe if you protect the people from the bear, you protect the bear from the people.
As many outdoor enthusiasts know, if a bear exhibits aggression and significant habituated behavior, such as seeking out human food, they have to be put down or relocated.
Our product delivers lightweight, bear-resistant food storage that helps break this cycle.

Sustainability
We at Ursack believe that change is a community effort that begins with every individual making a concerted effort to improve the health of the outdoors and strengthening our communities through social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and animal welfare. we know that great things can happen when people join together in pursuit of a common purpose.
Our Commitment to the environment
