Just returned from a 7 day solo trip through the Sam Houston National Forest. I had 7 days of food packed in the bag.
Plus side: The bag sealed nicely, was easy to fit into my pack and and kept my food safe. And this thing is rugged.
Down side: The rope is very short so you will need to find a small tree to tie the bag to or it will need to be hung. Also, with a full load, it was heavy which made it difficult to hold the bag up while I tied it off. This was really a two person job. Also, the holes where the rope goes through are beginning to fray. I'll need to have them re-sewn.
I'll take it on my next trip and it is still a great option. Just be aware of the issues, learn how to live with them and you wont be disappointed.
I used this bag in the Rocky Mountains for a week and it served me fairly well. Some critter nibbled at the bag one night and made a few small holes, but it didn't manage to steal any of the food inside. Also, there is no way I could get the advertised "7+ days" of food inside. At 2500-3000 calories of dehydrated meals and snack bars per day, I could only pack about five days of food into it. On the plus side, it is easy to use and the reflective ties are a great feature. Overall I am satisfied with it and will take it with me again next year.
No issues with the one use so far - hung from a tree with paracord. Seems durable and will definitely use in the future. Reflector rope visible as advertised when shining a flashlight on it at night so you can find it.
Bought when on sale with an odor bag (which I believe was sized for the regular Ursack bag, but was convenient because I stacked our bowls on top of the odor bag inside the Ursack Major XL) and used it once in Montana.
This is my second bag. The first was a little small for trips with friends so I purchased this larger one. Does much better for long weekends with one or two friends. So far I haven't had any bear encounters so really can't comment on its effectiveness with them. But I like the lightweight and lack of bulk versus what my canister has. I do have the aluminum insert that I use when I'm in areas with high densities of bears just in case since the bag doesn't protect food from being crushed as someone else noted. Otherwise do without it and just assume the bag will protect my food from and squirrels and mice and other small critters chewing through.
This is my fourth ursack. I prefer them to bulky bear canasters That said the quality of the bags has seemed to drop. In particular the holes in the top of the bag that the rope goes thru were not clean. They were frayed and have already started to unravel.
