I have had a grizzly bear walk right by the older green bag, knocking the clean cooking pot next to it (warning system, everything inside bag was in odor barrier containers). The green bag did get chewed on by squirrels once, because I had eaten canned smoked oysters in olive oil and then touched the bag with my oily hands. When I got the black Major bag I bought a metal mesh critter bag to put it inside when at NF campgrounds. The critter bag is designed for squirrels and raccoons. When backpacking in the wilderness I keep everything inside it in an odor barrier bag, and then keep the bag in the tent vestibule. Why?, because even if it has no odor, bears know in general what it is and will try to get into it, and in the process drag it away from the campsite. Keep the bag odor free, and out of sight and out of mind.
I got this bag in Alaska to carry the extra smellies that didn't fit in my bear vault. I thought it would be perfect. Squirrels got ahold of it and did some serious chewing on the top where the ropes come through and chewed on the rope. I've tried contacting customer service several times with no response. I'm seriously disappointed in their service. They SAY they'll get back to you within 48 hours but it's been over 2 weeks and all I've heard is crickets. I would definitely NOT purchase again.
Ursack will attempt to frame this on user error, but I assure you I followed the directions to a T. The Ursack Major is no match for a determined bear. My bag was destroyed as was all the food in it, along with the opsack.
Bears evidently hate corn nuts, so those were left in tact.
I wanted the ursak to work so badly. Unfortunately within a year of using it, some raccoons went to town and tore tiny holes everywhere. (Despite using a odor-proof liner.) It is indeed not advertised as small critter-proof, but it still hurts to have spent so much and fail so quickly. I have no idea whether it will still be effective at all against bears
I must admit I did not have a bear encounter for a true test (that I was awake for!). That said, having lugged around bear canisters this seems like a great alternative. Our group used both on Alaska backcountry trip. No comparison. Easy to pack, tie and especially to hang. It will be my go to choice from here on out.
